Google has provided a very useful guide for marketing post-pandemic. More on that in a moment. But it got us thinking. We are sadly not at that point yet. While we battle it out as businesses during this seismic commercial upheaval, we need to be very much in the here and now.  

The importance of marketing during the pandemic

We know. Everyone is quite rightly reeling from the impacts COVID-19 has had. Whatever marketing plans you had could have been completely scuppered. The world has seen marketing spend fall off a cliff across the board, and it’s understandable. 

But, here’s the thing. There’s a very good reason to invest time and money into your marketing during the pandemic. And there are ways to do this effectively too. Namely, businesses need this to survive. By jumping on new opportunities, making the best of an all-round terrible situation, and pushing your marketing forward, you can boost your recovery as a business as we head back to normality. Or, the new normal. However, you like to think of it.  

How to market yourself during a pandemic

The theory is simple. You want to be on people’s minds during this time and stay ahead of the pack. That said, some of your previous activities and messages may just not fit now. Even though it’s jumping ahead a little, the aforementioned article by Google gives us a good rule of thumb to work with now. 

In summary, it talks about concentrating on:

  • Being relevant
  • Being disruptive 

People still want to hear from brands, but it’s given everyone a huge shove towards an altered mindset. As the article states, 65% of people believe brands should commit to making society better. It’s no great leap to say that marketing efforts need to align with this widespread sentiment.

And here we come to the key for many businesses trying to set out their marketing plans during this time. Digital marketing is fast becoming the cornerstone for marketing strategies. As more and more businesses concentrate on improving their brand’s online presence, this is a solid way of staying relevant, visible and disruptive.

Nothing could have prepared us for this. At the same time, COVID-19 has indeed revealed new ways of working more effectively, and marketing strategy hasn’t been left out of those revelations.
